Our fashion favourites in 2018

As we come towards the end of the year, it's always fun to go down memory lane and reflect on what we did, where we travelled to, who we met and what we wore.

There's no denying that 2018 has offered us some interesting and iconic fashion moments. Perhaps we didn't understand some and some we loved more than we thought we would and then there are others that will remain timeless favourites, no matter the time or year. Either way, we're sure you can agree that this year has been the birth of incredible trends, stunning catwalk shows and jaw-dropping red carpet moments that will go down in history.

Here, UNIQUE21 features this years fashion favourites:

Amal Clooney at The Royal Wedding...

Before Meghan Markle walked down the aisle and made history, we were of course captivated by all of the celebrity guests at the wedding but there was one star who, literally, out shined them all - Amal Clooney. Not only is she the definition of an empowered, brilliant and beautiful woman - She is also a subtle fashionista. Amal dresses elegantly walked into the Windsor Castle wearing a honey yellow dress and gold and clear heels.

The Return of the iconic Dior Saddle bag...

From Carrie Bradshaw to Paris Hilton, Dior’s iconic Saddle bag was seen on the arms of every ‘It’ girl going – both real and fictional – in the late '90s and early ‘00s. The last few months has seen something of a revival in people carrying the vintage tote, so much so that Dior has actually decided to bring back the design and we loved it!

 Animal print...

A collage of models wearing animal print in different but stylish ways

Who else was a fan of animal print this year!? For decades, the furry leopard print coat has been considered the epitome of chic, from the swing-cut style that Jackie Kennedy made waves with in the 60's to the many versions Kate Moss has been photographed in over the years. Aside from furry outerwear though, many designers build their collections around animal print. Somehow, animal spots pair well with almost everything, adding instant excitement to a look and will forever remain somewhat of a timeless trend. But this year especially, it seemed to be all the rage. And as you can tell, we were here for it!

Lady Gaga takes back her power in a statement suit...

There's no denying that Women made a huge impact on the year 2018 (not to say we hadn't before). But this year we spoke out louder, we stood taller and we created massive movements that shook the world around us. Lady Gaga being one such talented force who joined in by making a brave statement this year when she turned up to a Red carpet event in an 80's inspired power-suit - and what a statement she made.

During her Women in Hollywood acceptance speech at the Elle Awards, Gaga spoke about the significance of her look for the occasion:

"I tried on dress after dress today getting ready for this event, one tight corset after another, one heel after another, a diamond, a feather, thousands of beaded fabrics and the most beautiful silks in the world. To be honest, I felt sick to my stomach. And I asked myself: What does it really mean to be a woman in Hollywood? We are not just objects to entertain the world. We are not simply images to bring smiles or grimaces to people’s faces. We are not members of a giant beauty pageant meant to be pit against one another for the pleasure of the public. We women in Hollywood, we are voices. We have deep thoughts and ideas and beliefs and values about the world and we have the power to speak and be heard and fight back when we are silenced."

She emphasised the importance of women taking their power back and later continued to say that in this suit, she felt like herself and that today, she wears the pants. This just goes to further prove the power of fashion and why it is so important  as a form of expression, especially in today's political climate.

Cycling shorts aren't just for cycling...

If there's anything Kim Kardashian and her sisters have taught us this year, it's that cycling shorts are back! And not the way they were in the late 80's/early 90's. These days you can literally pull off cycling shorts with anything and where them anywhere - we're not just talking about the gym either. So much so that designers have re-imagined and re-designed your traditional cycling/biker shorts to fit all your fashion needs. As seen above, they can literally be worn with anything! It's probably one of the most versatile piece of clothing we have in our wardrobes - your tomboy alternative to feminine skirts. The shorts are perfect for when you're heading out for dinner and just want to pair it with a smart blazer or are simply going to the movies and want to stick them on with an oversized hoodie and trainers - there's no going wrong with this one.

Naomi and Kate reunite on the catwalk...

What better way to sum up our year than to celebrate the reunion of our two favourite models on the runway after many years. They both met when Campbell was 18 and Moss just 15 years of age, so the Fashion God's must have been smiling when these two walked together for Kim Jones's last Louis Vuitton show - we sure were! Both women represent individuality and girl power and have been a major influence on the fashion world for decades.

Here's to seeing more of them and other strong influential women come together and continue to pave the way for us in 2019. Can't wait to see what we have in store!
